Mr. Monday Morning: Week 2
Kerry Dolan and Vince Bavaro
9/21/09

Boss of the Week: Chris Johnson- 16 Att, 197 Yds, 2 TD, 9 Rec, 87 Yds, 1 TD

Johnson scored on plays of 57, 69, and 91 yards.  I really do not know what to say other than that he makes the best in the world look like children sometimes.  On his first rushing TD, he morphed into a Toyota Supra and hit the nitrous oxide booster on his way to the stripe.  Johnson is a “10-second car”.

These are the types of games only a handful of running backs are capable of it’s usually an indicator of massive fantasy years.   Feel free to upgrade your expectations of Johnson’s season as high as you’d like.

Honorable Mention: Matt Schaub- 357 Yds, 4 TD
Schaub was able to put all his tools to use on his way to a stellar performance.  That is now back-to-back games in which the Titans defense has given up 350 passing yards or more.

Weakest of the Weak (Déjà Vu): Steve Slaton- 17 Att, 34 Yds, 3 Rec, 25 Yds

The Texans O-Line was out of sync running the ball and Slaton wasn’t able to create anything on his own.  The other concern is that Slaton had two fumbles in this game.  He had one last week as well.  Chris Brown had a lot of carries in the fourth quarter in a close game, showing there is a possible mistrust in Slaton’s ability to hold onto the ball.  We were really looking for Slaton to pick it up in this game considering he ran for over 100 against the Titans in both meetings last year.

Equally Weak: Matt Forte- 13 Att, 29 Yds, 5 Rec, 33 Yds

It was the Steelers defense, but Forte, as a top-3 fantasy draft selection, needs to get more than 30 yards rushing.  He showed up in the passing game, which we expected.  It was simply a frustrating game for the second consecutive week from Forte.

BUT!! Don’t be too startled.  During long NFL seasons, most every back goes through a short span where they just can’t seem to break free.  I think it just so happens that this normal “slump” has happened to both Forte and Slaton in their first two games.  Sit tight on these guys as I’m sure bogus trade offers will be proposed.  Try to buy low if you can.

Week 2 Transformation

Andre Johnson had his troubles against Darrelle Revis and the Jets defense last week, but in Week 2 against the Titans, he made up for it like only a true hulk can.  Johnson undoubtedly had the catch of the week , a beautiful one-handed juggling act for a TD.  Johnson finished with 10 Rec, 149 Yds, and two TDs.  Well Done.

On the other hand…

Greg Jennings followed up his hulky six catch, 106 yard, TD performance in Week 1 with a sweet goose egg this week against the Bengals.  That’s right a zero, zilch.  I hadn’t pegged Jennings as the type of guy to ever end up pointless, especially when he is the best weapon on the Packers, but the unpredictability of fantasy is what makes it so great.

Gore-geous Game

Frank Gore ripped off TDs of 79 and 80 yards en route to an easy “30-bagger” (new name for a 30-point, insanely hulky, individual performance that carries your whole fantasy team.  See Chris Johnson too)

Destination 50 Touchdowns

Drew Brees dominated again… this time against the upper-echelon Eagles defense.  It looks like no defense will be able to contain Brees’ onslaught. This is reminiscent of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady’s historic seasons.  The only thing stopping Brees from throwing for at least three TDs and 300 yards in any week is facing a ball control offense with a solid defense.  He sees very little of that this year.

Rivers, V. Jackson, and Sproles tear up the Ravens

Philip Rivers- 436 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
Vincent Jackson- 6 Rec, 141 Yds, TD
Darren Sproles- 7 Rec, 124 Yds, TD

As expected, San Diego had a tough time running the ball, so they aired it out – Rivers completed 25 out of 45 attempts.  Rivers has become one of the best young QBs in the league and V. Jax is having a breakout season.  Last week, we suggested that you trade for Jackson because we believe he will finish a top-10 WR.  Sproles is explosive (81-yard touchdown) and a must-start as long as LT is out.  The Chargers are fun to watch.

Random Thoughts

* Adrian Peterson ran well, going for 92 yards and a touchdown.  Really nothing shocking here.  Expect this average nearly every week.

* Marques Colston is rewarding investors mightily for the extra risk involved in selecting him.  Three touchdowns through the first two games.

* You may not have noticed, but DeAngelo Williams has taken care of business so far this season with 158 total yards and two scores.

* Matt Ryan has put up excellent stats through two weeks.  He could be a righteous kill

* Mario Manningham had a career-game, catching 10 passes for 150 yards and a TD, while showing nice ability after the catch.  Pick him up in all formats because he might prove to be a major target for Eli Manning.

* The Giants’ Steve Smith added 10 receptions for 134 yards and a score.  He is the most reliable WR on the team, exhibiting great route-running and hands. He's the only sure thing in the Giants WR corps.

* The Ravens rode Willis McGahee’s hot hand to the tune of 15 carries, 79 yards and two touchdowns, which is frustrating to Ray Rice owners.  Both of McGahee’s TDs were from inside the five-yard line, solidifying his role as goal-line back.

* Fred Jackson was a major workhorse Sunday, running 28 times for a career-high 163 yards in the Bills win over the Bucs.  He also had 6 catches for 25 yards.  Look for he and Marshawn Lynch to split carries when Lynch returns, with Beast Mode as the bigger TD threat.

* Jets shutdown cornerback Darrelle Revis shadowed Randy Moss all day and had an interception when the Pats finally tried to go deep.  He has shutdown Moss and A. Johnson the past two weeks.  Take notice of his hulk status.

* Rookie Johnny Knox looks to be Jay Cutler’s favorite target so far this year, making me worry about Earl Bennett.  I was at the Bears game (Vince) and Knox was on the field for two-WR sets late in the game, not Bennett.  I’d still hold onto Bennett though in fantasy and see what happens.

* Cutler had a perfect game in the Bears victory over the Steelers Sunday, easing the minds of Chicagoans for at least a week.

* The Steelers are having a tough time running the ball, which is good for Big Ben and Pitt’s receivers in fantasy.  However, it’s not good if the Steelers plan to repeat as Super Bowl champs.
