Mr. Monday Morning: Week 3

Boss of the Week- Maurice Jones-Drew … 23 Att, 119 Yds, 3 TD, 4 Rec, 28 Yds

We ranked MJD as our No. 1 overall fantasy hulk heading into the season and it was only a matter of time before he made jaws drop like Adrian Peterson has so far this season.  We expected Jones-Drew to have a big game this week versus a swiss cheese Houston run defense and he delivered!  I actually got laughed at in one league for selecting MJD over AP first overall on draft day.  While AP is the biggest sicko in the NFL and our 1A overall ranking, who’s laughing this week boys?

Weakest of the Week- Terrell Owens

There aren’t any stats written next to T.O.’s name because he had none!  Zero.  Trent Edwards and the Bills passing offense were set up for a big day against Drew Brees’ potent passing attack, but Buffalo flopped.  Owens failed to make a catch, despite five targets, ending a 185-game catch streak.  His streak was the longest of any active player and the third-longest in NFL history behind Marvin Harrison (190) and Jerry Rice (274).

Ted Ginn Jr. also did zero this week.

The Eagle Way

Eagles fantasy players have not missed a beat with Kevin Kolb starting in place of Donovan McNabb.  Kolb has made the most of his opportunity going for 300-plus yards in each of the past two games.  McNabb is expected to return after the team’s Week 4 bye.

DeSean Jackson is ridiculous.  He’s even better than I expected in his second season and grabbed six receptions for 149 yards and a TD Sunday.  In my mind, Percy Harvin is the ’08 Jackson.  Keep that in mind going forward, including next year.

Brent Celek had a 100-yard game for the second straight week, plus a TD.  The kid is for real, but I’ve been saying that since June.  You couldn’t beat the late-round price at his position on draft day.  He’s been a target hog with Kolb in the lineup and hopefully McNabb looks his way just as much.

LeSean McCoy looked hulky starting in place of Brian Westbrook (ankle), going for 93 total yards and a touchdown on 21 touches.  He ran impressively doing it, showing why the Philly organization developed a “man-crush” on him as soon as training camp.  He offers real RB1 potential - RB2 AT LEAST - anytime Westbrook is out of the lineup.

The Return of Pierre

For those of us who deployed Pierre Thomas in our starting lineups this week, it was difficult to predict what type of game he would have in his first one back from a knee sprain, but he responded beautifully with 126 yards on 14 carries, including two touchdowns.  Go ahead and start the slasher hulk with confidence from here on out, but keep an eye on Mike Bell’s role when he returns from injury.  I hypothesize that the journeyman Bell won’t affect Thomas’ fantasy value much.

Random Observations/Thoughts

* After throwing 48 times for 265 yards the first two weeks combined, Brett Favre threw 46 times for 301 yards and two touchdowns Sunday.  He led a game-winning 80-yard TD drive with 90 seconds and no timeouts left.  The game-winner was a beautiful scrambling 32-yard TD pass to Greg Lewis.  This game was encouraging for Favre owners as opposed to the first couple weeks.

* If Matt Schaub plays all 16 games, he might finish a top-3 quarterback.  He and the Houston offense are legit, but that’s nothing new to us.

* Steve Slaton looked alive Sunday, to the tune of 113 total yards and 6.3 yards per carry.  He hasn’t reached the end zone yet, but that makes him a great buy low candidate.  It’s worth mentioning that Chris Brown fumbled at the goal-line late in the fourth quarter, sealing the Texans fate in the loss column.

* The Cleveland Browns stink for fantasy purposes.  If you’re relying on any of these guys, good luck.  However, I am still hopeful James Davis can emerge as a fantasy factor by the end of the season.

* Willis McGahee is leading the NFL in touchdowns with five scores.  I believe he’s hulked up this year because he was/is seriously hungry with all the Ray Rice hype the past few months.

* Late-rounder, Vernon Davis, had a big game going for 96 yards and two touchdowns.  Nice to see Davis produce and the 49ers put up points, especially without Frank Gore (ankle).

* Vincent Jackson is leading the league in receiving yards with 317.  The crazy thing is that’s only on 16 catches= 19.8 yards per catch.

* Peyton Manning played like Peyton Manning this week – 379 yards, 4 TD, INT

* If you’re an Anthony Gonzalez owner and haven’t picked up Pierre Garcon yet, do it now… if he’s still available.  I scooped him today.  The strong speedster scored for the second straight week and Manning looks confident in him.

* Despite two carries for -2 yards against the Colts, don’t give up on Beanie Wells yet.  It’s too early and he’s the most talented running back on the Cardinals roster.  Tim Hightower is nice too of course, but Wells is the type of player who can get better as the season goes on.

* Surprise fantasy hulks Joe Flacco, Fred Jackson, Cedric Benson, and Steve Smith (NYG) are each in the top-5 in yards at their respective positions.  Who knows how long this pace will last, but all of these guys look to be real fantasy contributors this season.  Jackson’s value will take a hit though, when Marshawn Lynch returns next week.

* Every year, Santana Moss has a couple huge games and the rest are average and inconsistent.  A monster one came Sunday against Detroit, as Moss hauled in 10 passes for 178 yards and a TD.  Jason Campbell had 340 yards, 2 TD, and an INT in the loss.

* Fred Taylor made his mark in the Patriots backfield, totaling 105 rushing yards on 21 carries, including a touchdown.  The rest of the Pats RBs haven’t done ish up to this point, so Taylor appears to be the guy right now.

* Julius Jones continues to look good.  Ride him as long as you can hope he stays healthy, consistent, and hangs onto the rock. If he does those things, he’ll prove to be a draft day steal.
